Here they are — your 2017-18 Marching Statesmen seniors!
With the Statesmen back in the playoffs after missing out last year, the postseason atmosphere at Moss Field was electric. The Statesmen won the game in decisive fashion despite missing their starting QB, and on the musical side, band parents and directors were happy to have another marching band performance to make up for the canceled gamer earlier in the season.
On Senior Night, a nail-biting finish that didn’t go the way of the Statesmen didn’t diminish what was overall a captivating game on a gorgeous October evening. The marching band shows were top-notch as usual, and business was brisk at the concession stand. Many, many thanks to our graduating seniors for four years of hard work, unforgettable performances, and lasting memories!
On September 29, the WGHS band program continued the spirited tradition of Hixson night, when 8th graders join the high school marching band on field for a special halftime performance. As usual, despite holding no joint practices, the combined unit sounded fantastic. The high school band’s pregame show featured the debut performance of Queen’s smash hit, “Bohemian Rhapsody, and all in attendance can attest that it was worth the wait. While the Statesmen fell to the Lancers in the game’s final moments, all four quarters were thrilling, the weather was perfect, and the mini-cheerleaders were a delight!
The kickoff of the 2017 WGHS marching band season featuring the music of Queen was a resounding success, both for the band and for the Statesmen football team. Check out our photo gallery and videos of the pregame and halftime shows.
See photos and listen to audio of the wonderful performance by Wind Symphony students. Thanks to Jessica Ingraham, Michael Gandlmayr, Laura Reinert, and the rest of the St. Louis Symphony for inviting us to play. Thank you Adam Maness for writing such a beautiful piece to honor the life of Drew Thompson! Thank you bassoonists; Felicia Foland, Vincent Karmanov, and Heather Mosley for your breathtaking performance.
The Webster Groves High School jazz bands were invited to perform September 25 at Jazz at the Bistro, one of the top jazz venues in the world, in midtown’s Grand Center district. All three Webster jazz bands rose to the occasion, providing a wonderful evening of music for friends and family in a swanky setting. Here’s hoping this becomes an annual event!
